On January 23, 1573 took place the Battle near the Lode Castle - a military clash during the Livonian War between the Russian and Swedish armies.
In the Razryadnyi book for the year 7081 there is a mention of this battle:
"And the sovereign of the tsar and the grand duke's army had a battle with German people near the town of Kolovertiya, and the sovereign's army men were beaten and killed in the battle by the sovereign's boyar Prince Ivan Ondreevich Shuiskovo, and Prince Ivan Fedorovich Mstislavsky and Mikhail Yakovlevich Morozov, and many nobles and children of boyars and archers were beaten. And from that fight his brother in law Prince Olexander Sibekovich Cherkasskoy went away to Germans and told in German regiments to Klaus, a German voevoda, that many noblemen of Tsar ran away. And Klaus, the king's Dumchey, came to the sovereign's boyars and voevods, and beat the sovereign's people".
The defeat played a certain role in the war. In particular, Ivan the Terrible wrote a peace letter to the King of Sweden with the proposal to suspend hostilities until the meeting of ambassadors. However, according to historians, the main reason for this step was not defeat in battle, and Cheremis mutiny in the Kazan region, which required redeployment of troops. In addition the fighting did not stop - Russian troops under the command of voivode Mikhail Beznin successfully operated near Revel.
